November 6, 2009 - Tri River Conference Championships. Woodward Park, Fresno, CA The girls ran a great race, finishing second at the conference championships to Buchanan, 29 - 49. Senior Saylah Barserian placed second with an official time of 17:57 to lead the Cougars. Senior Meghan Marvin (19:18), So. Lindsay Gray (19:22 PR), and So. Kaylie Ogle (19:26 PR) finished 7th,8th,9th overall with Junior McKenzie Poe (21:28) finishing off the scoring in 24th place, two places ahead of teammate Desiree Bustamante (21:30). Sophomore Brian Exline (8th, 16:29) led the boys team to a 3rd place finish. The Cougars scored 85 points, behind Buchanan (26 points), and Clovis West (38). Senior John Knepper (16:42) placed 12th, with fr. Paul DeDios (17:17) took 20th, jr. Josh Webb (24th, 17:31) and freshman Ryan Walker (32nd, 18:05) also scoring for Clovis High. Also finishing were junior Kevin Freeman (33rd, 18:10) and senior Vinny Singh (34th, 18:11).
October 29, 2009 - John Seamons Invitational, Kingsburg, CA
With one week to go until the league championships, the Cougars faced many of the top teams in the Central Section.
Leading the boys team to a 5th place finish, sophomore Ryan Phillips finished the 3 mile course in 15:16 to place third out of 242 athletes. Josh Webb (9th, 15:29) also ran well, as the depleted squad battled tough. Senior John Knepper (34th, 16:01), Jr. Kevin Freeman (58th, 16:55), and Jr. Estevan Beltran (77th, 17:10) rounded out the scoring.
Saylah Barserian blistered the course in 16:51 to win the Varsity Girls race, leading the Cougars to the team title. Lindsay Gray ran 6th in 18:07, and Meghan Marvin (8th, 18:19) finished ahead of Sophomore Kaylie Ogle (9th, 18:35). Junior McKenzie Poe (16th, 18:37) ran possibly her best race of the year so far, and Desiree Bustamante (34th, 20:15) and Kyla Lennex (45th, 21:05) placed well in the field of 147 runners. Freshman Ryan Walker ran 16:28 to place 4th of 161 athletes in the Frosh-Soph race, and run the fourth fastest time of the day for CHS.
October 24, 2009 - Mt SAC Invitational, Walnut, CA Two Cougars ran the fabled course here today, and both left knowing a strong postseason is possible. Senior Saylah Barserian finished 5th in the Individual Sweepstakes race, blistering the course in 17:36. Senior Meghan Marvin finished the same race in 18:33 to claim 14th place. October 22, 2009 - Cam Ostrand Invitational, Reedley College
Both varsity teams won today, and the Frosh Soph Boys were second on a day where solid performances were abundant. The Girls were led by Lindsay Gray (2nd, 19:35) and Kaylie Ogle. McKenzie Poe, Saylah Barserian, and Meghan Marvin finished 7,8,9 to complete the win with 30 points. In the JV race, Desiree Bustamante, Kyla Lennex, and Megan Buettner finished 2,3,4. The Frosh Soph race saw freshman Bayan Saffour compete in her first race as a Cougar. The Varsity Boys raced the full 5K distance, coming in strong behind Josh Webb, Ryan Phillips, Paul DeDios, Brian Exline (9th) and senior John Knepper (10th). Estevan Beltran and junior Kevin Freeman also raced well. Freshman Ryan Walker finished second in the Frosh-Soph race to lead the cougars.
October 16th, 2009 - MtSAC Jr. High meet. The Clark Chieftains traveled to Mt SAC to show their stuff, and ended up in the top 7 of all Jr. Highs that competed that day. Here's our salute to the eighth graders...next year's Cougars
October 10, 2009 - Clovis Invitational The host Cougars had a very good day on their home course, posting some of the best times of the year, and showing that the previous week may have been a mirage.
The girls finished second to Crescenta Valley (119- 150) in the Extra Large School division, behind a 17:51second place performance by senior Saylah Barserian. Senior Meghan Marvin (14th, 19:16) provided more leadership, and Sophomores Lindsay Gray (19, 19:32) and Kaylie Ogle (21st, 19:33) moved into the CHS All-Time Top 25 list with very strong races. Juniors McKenzie Poe (95th, 20:47) and Alyssa Mejia (111th, 20:57) finished out the team performance along with Sophomore Emma Rogers (138th, 21:28). The Boys split their young squad between the Varsity and Frosh Soph races. Juniors Josh Webb (38th, 16:35) and Estevan Beltran (95th, 17:10) and senior Chad Burnett (181st, 18:36) competed in the XL Schools Varsity race as an incomplete team. The Frosh Soph Team took third with 155 points behind Arcadia (64) and Canyon (108). Sophomore Ryan Phillips took 1st place in 16:21. Freshman Paul DeDios and Sophomore Brian Exline were 5th and 6th, both finishing the 5K course in 16:34. Freshmen Ryan Walker (51st, 17:41) and Taylor Morris (117th, 18:33) rounded out the scoring. In a mythical 'combination race', the Cougar boys finished 25th out of 136 teams that raced that day.
October 2, 2009 - Golden West Invite. Cutler Park, Visalia, CA The Clovis harriers experienced a meet of extremes today, with the Varsity girls putting in an uninspired performance, finishing third to Clovis East and Ridgeview (Bakersfield). Meghan Marvin and Lindsay Gray led the way for the Cougars, However, the brightest performance was delivered by Junior Alyssa Mejia, who fought through leg pain to finish 12th, outkicking Ridgeview's Lashya Morgan down the stretch. On the boys side, the younger runners stayed together to finish 1st overall in the Frosh Soph division. Freshman Paul DeDios and Sophomore Brian Exline went 1-2, providing the biggest highlight of the day for Clovis High.
September 25, 2009 - Mt. Whitney Inv Mooney Grove Park, Visalia, CA Clovis High ran very well here, taking home three second place trophies in the Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls, and JV Girls. Sophomore Ryan Phillips led the Varsity Boys with a terrific performance, moving from 26th to 8th over the last 1.1 miles of the flat 3 mile course. Saylah Barserian fought hard at the front of the Cougar pack, but the Varsity girls still fell to Buchanan.
September 19, 2009 - Woodbridge Invitational The Cougars traveled to Irvine Saturday and had a great meet. The fast 3 mile course was the perfect setting for raising the confidence of our runners, regardless of experience. On the girls side, the Novice race was a good start, with Senior Brittany Hodges (4th) and Junior Kyla Lennex (9th) running well in their first 3 mile races of the season. Lindsay Gray (18:47) took 4th of 163 runners in her sophomore race. Junior Desiree Bustamante (20:14) placed 9th of 186 JV runners in her first ever race. Senior Meghan Marvin took 4th in the Varsity girls race with a strong 17:51 clocking. Senior Saylah Barserian finished 19th in the Girls Sweepstakes race with a team leading 17:25. The Boys continued the strong Cougar performances with Paul DeDios winning the Freshman race in 15:42, the second best time of the day for all Clovis High runners. Junior Josh Webb led all Cougars with a blistering time of 14:57 to finish second after a wild duel and sprint to the finish. Brian Exline (15:44) and Ryan Phillips (15:54) took 8th and 9th, respectively, out of 309 runners in their sophomore boys race. Other medalists were Juniors Kevin Freeman and Estevan Beltran, and Seniors John Knepper and Vinny Singh.
August 10 - 16, 2009 - Mammoth Lakes, CA Monday: Travel Day brought cool weather and a nice warm up run at Shady Rest Park, followed by an out and back on some trails. Good fried chicken for dinner. Tuesday: After breakfast, went to the Mammoth Rock trailhead and chose runs from 3 to 7.5 miles. Ultimate at Shady Rest park in the afternoon, and a chance to meet US Olympian Ryan Hall in the evening. Wednesday: MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN! 2200 ft. climb in 3.24 miles. Everybody made it! The afternoon brought more Ultimate, with a surprise win for Buettner's team (He's lost quite a bit up here.) Thursday: The morning brought a tempo run out near Hot Creek. Afternoon was host to the annual Rainbow Run Championship, won by 'The The Crazy Crazy Chickens Chickens' (Ryan Phillips, Kevin Freeman, Meghan Marvin, and Megan Buettner). Movie night featured 'The Long Green Line" Friday: The traditional drive to Bridgeport for the Barney Lake run. We met many nice backpackers on the trail, and nobody sprained an ankle. The team had dinner in town.
